Bowdon Paved Garden
The Brief
The owners of this lovely victorian property had lived here a while but not done any work to the small walled garden to the rear. Whilst it was a good open space it was tired, the lawn was worn, plants old and tatty and they had recently had a brick storage shed constructed a the end of the garden.
The brief was simple, bring the garden up to date, make it more usable, interesting to look at and more practical to get items to and from the side gate to the shed, all year round.
The garden should be low maintenance, as this busy couple didn’t have the time to commit to a lot of gardening.
The Solution
The clients had an idea to run a long wide path down the garden to the shed. This would solve the practicality aspect of the brief and keep the space light and airy with an open feel.
The trees 3/4 of the way down the garden were to stay, so we used their colour to influence the palate for the rest of the garden, with lime green euphorbia and pittosporum Tom Thumb providing contrast with its dark purple leaves. Buxus cubes punctuated the beds, along with white lavender, salvia caradonna, astrantia, heuchera, roses and ornamental grasses, with ferns and hellebores where more shady plants were needed.
We planted lots of alliums and tulips which unfortunately the very determined squirrels desecrated so we will be looking at replanting some areas in the spring to refresh and add some more interest.
